Port of Batabanó

This text corresponds to the cover challenge that is carried out every week on the Minister's Facebook Page, so the image on the cover of that occasion corresponds to the dredging that was carried out in the port of Batabanó, by the Maritime Works Construction Company of MICONS in close collaboration with the Maritime Administration and other entities of the MITRANS System, to increase the depth of its entrance channel and allow access for larger vessels, especially the ferry Perseverancia, a vessel that has been playing an important role in the transportation of passengers and rolling cargo to and from the Isle of Youth in the current year.

 

Sediments had accumulated in this channel for several years and it was no longer possible to dock ships with a draft of three or more meters, hence the importance of the activity shown in this cover photo, from which it was possible to have a channel 45 meters wide by 730 meters long for the entry and exit of boats. During a year and four months, 63,597 cubic meters of sand and other sediments had to be extracted with two dredging technologies: crab and stationary suction, which began dredging from 3 meters.
