This week's cover image is of the tug Caribe 5, leased by the Empresa de Navegación Caribe to the company Servicios Marítimos Mariel (SMM S.A). This company, with 100% Cuban capital, was created this year with the mission of providing agency services, pilotage, naval maneuvers and supply of ships, vessels and entities on land in the western end of the country; so as to facilitate port activity, mainly in the Container Terminal of Mariel Bay.
The tug Caribe 5 has a length of 19.33 meters and a width of 7.23 meters, its maximum draft is 3.39 meters. It has two engines of 706 Kw of power each as main engines, with a total power of 1412 kw. This tugboat operates in the Mariel Special Development Zone (ZED), ensuring the entry and exit of container ships, fuel tankers and the movement of the auxiliary fleet that allows the operation of the Mariel port area, such as water rafts.
The company SMM S.A. also operates in the ports of Cabañas, Santa Lucía and María la Gorda.
The Mariel Special Development Zone, a project promoted by Army General Raúl Castro, has a growing weight in the Cuban economy and in the country's foreign trade, with great future potential.
